The QuickTime Streaming Server is server software developed by Apple that can provide and stream real-time MPEG-4 , 3gp and QuickTime -compatible live streams over the Internet .

Programs or devices such as the QuickTime Player , the VLC media player , the PlayStation Portable or modern cell phones can play these audio or video streams live.

While the QuickTime Streaming Server is only available for Mac OS X (Server), Apple publishes the source code free of charge under the name Darwin Streaming Server , which is identical to the QuickTime Streaming Server. Other differences are the better administrative and media management functions in the QuickTime Streaming Server.
