QFS ( Q uick F ile S ystem ; German: Fast File System ) is an open-source - file system from Sun Microsystems . It is firmly integrated with SAM, the storage and archive manager, which is often also called SAM-QFS . SAM offers the functionality of a hierarchical storage management system.
Functionality
QFS largely supports volume management capabilities, which allow many disks to be grouped together to offer a single file system. The file system metadata can be saved on a separate set of disks, which ensures a short access time to the files. This is particularly useful in streaming applications. There is also the option of using the shared reader or shared writer option to access the file system from several nodes at the same time.
history
SAM-QFS was originally developed by LSC Inc , which was bought by Sun in 2001. Sun released the SAM-QFS source code in the OpenSolaris project in March 2008.
