Quilliam Foundation

The Quilliam Foundation was founded in London in April 2008 by dropouts from the Islamist scene and sees itself as an anti-Islamist think tank . Under the direction of two directors Maajid Nawaz and Ed Husain (author of the book The Islamist ) and President Noman Benotman , the Foundation organizes research projects, public events and media campaigns. It is supported by numerous Muslim and non-Muslim intellectuals and celebrities. It is named after Sheikh William Henry Abdullah Quilliam (1856–1932), a British converted to Islam who built Britain's first mosque in Liverpool .

The Quilliam Foundation takes a critical look at the Islamist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir , to which Maajid Nawaz and Ed Husain themselves belonged for several years and which in Great Britain is particularly popular with young Muslims.

The Quilliam Foundation wants to “generate creative approaches to counter the Islamist ideology behind terrorism , and at the same time make evidence-based recommendations on political measures to governments.” It rejects the ideologies of Islamism and jihadism “as deviating from Islamic tradition and thus irrelevant (...) readings of Islam . (She) upholds Islam as a pluralistic , multi-faceted tradition that can heal the pathology of Islamic extremism . "

In detail, the Quilliam Foundation aims to

  • to highlight and criticize the weaknesses and contradictions of Islamist thought and action

  • Encourage current Islamists to give up their ties to their movements and join mainstream Islam.

The Quilliam Foundation is committed to the full integration of Muslims as citizens - not as a religious community - into Western societies.

activity

The activities of the Quilliam Foundation are divided into three organizational units:

  • a Research and Publications Unit carries out research projects and policy advice on the integration of Muslims in western civil societies and publishes the relevant media
  • As part of the Quilliam Outreach and Training Unit , a Radicalization Awareness Training was developed that is carried out exclusively by former members of radical Islamic organizations
  • The Global Affairs Unit sends leading British Muslims as "ambassadors" to Islamic states, especially to Syria and Pakistan, to hold information events about Muslim life in Western countries at universities and other educational institutions, in which theological counter-arguments against the worldview of Al- Al Qaeda will be developed.
