Quinctilius Varus (Eques)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quinctilius (in the tradition often Quintilius ) Varus (* around 70 BC in Cremona ; † 24/23 BC) was a Roman knight and friend of the poets Virgil and Horace . He is not to be confused with the senator and governor Publius Quinctilius Varus .

Varus got to know Virgil, who was about the same age, during her youth in Cremona. Later he was a student of the Epicurean philosopher Siron and was also associated with Philodemos of Gadara . Horace was also one of his friends, who after the death of Varus wrote a mourning poem addressed to Virgil (Ode 1, 24). Varus is also mentioned in other poems by Horace, for example in Ode 1, 18, which is presumably addressed to him, and in Ars poetica (438 ff.). Varus owned an estate near Tibur .
