Quintus Petronius Modestus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quintus Petronius Modestus (full name form Quintus Petronius Gai filius Pupinia Modestus ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 1st century AD . Through three inscriptions that were found in Tergeste and that are dated to 98/102 AD, individual stations of his career are known.

Modestus had that of Primus Pilus in the legions I Adiutrix and XII Fulminata recorded in the inscription as the first position of his military career . Subsequently, he was (in this order) Tribunus militum of the Cohors V Vigilum and Tribune of the Cohors XII Urbana and the Cohors V Praetoria . He then became a procurator in the province of Hispania citerior ; this post was associated with an annual income of 200,000 sesterces .

Modestus was inscribed in the Pupinia tribe . He probably came from Tergeste, today's Trieste. The Roman theater of Trieste was built by him, as can be seen from the inscriptions ( dedit idemque dedicavit ) found nearby.
