history

In 1887, the United Kieselguhr and Corkstone Society Rheinhold & Co was founded in Celle by the brothers Otto and Sartorius Rheinhold together with Georg Soenderop. The Greek letter lambda , already used in the logo at that time , a symbol for thermal conductivity, has been an integral part of the logo since then and stands for quality and expertise. The main material kieselguhr is mined in the company's own facility near Hanover and used to insulate steam boilers and locomotives. A little later, in 1896, C. & E. Mahla GmbH was founded by the brothers Carl and Emil Mahla in Nuremberg . In 1928 the VKI Vereinigte Korkindustrie AG was set up in Berlin to process and trade cork bark and all goods that can be manufactured from it. This unites u. a. Rheinhold & Co. Vereinigte Kieselgur und Korksteingesellschaft mbH and C. & E. Mahla GmbH.

In 1956, Rheinhold & Co. and C. & E. Mahla merge to form Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH based in Mannheim . This becomes the most important participation of the VKI in the following years. The cork processing is becoming less important, because cheaper alternatives from the petrochemical industry are conquering the market. The Vereinigte Korkindustrie AG was renamed to the Vereinigte Kunststoffindustrie AG in 1971 and two years later it was merged with Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH to form VKI Rheinhold & Mahla AG. In 1975 Bayer AG took over VKI Rheinhold & Mahla AG and converted it into Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH in 1979. The company is based in Munich and the insulation production has already been outsourced. Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH now offers the planning, construction and installation of insulation in industry and shipbuilding, technical noise protection, facade technology and interior construction. In 1990 Bayer AG sold its shares in Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH and Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH was converted into a stock corporation. In 1992 the AG took over the Norwegian ship interior fitter Isenta Molde AS and renamed it R&M Ship Interior AS. In 2002, Bilfinger Berger AG acquired the entire block of shares in Rheinhold & Mahla AG, including the trademark rights, and integrated them into the group.

In the shipbuilding division of the group, R&M Schiffsisolierung und Aufbau GmbH was renamed R&M Ship Technologies GmbH in 2006. A financial investor and members of the management from the Bilfinger Berger Group take over the shipbuilding division by forming R&M Ship Tec GmbH with its subsidiaries R&M Ship Technologies GmbH and R&M Ship Interior AS, headquartered in Bremen (Germany).

Between 2007 and 2009 the companies R&M Ship Technologies Finland Oy based in Turku (Finland), R&M Ship Technologies USA, Inc. based in Philadelphia (USA) and R&M Ship Interiores Navais Ltda. with headquarters in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and in 2011 the headquarters will be relocated to Hamburg (Germany). 2012 - 125th anniversary of the R&M Group and the acquisition of Alvedoor (Kunshan) Co. Ltd. based in Kunshan, China, the renaming of R&M Ship Tec GmbH to R&M International GmbH and the founding of the company R&M International Asia Operations Pte. Ltd. based in Singapore and the Iso Prefab AS joint venture with Linjebygg Offshore AS (LBO). Alvedoor (Kunshan) Co. Ltd. is founded in 2013 in R&M Alvedoor (Kunshan) Co. Ltd. renamed and under the legal entities of R&M Ship Technologies GmbH and R&M Alvedoor (Kunshan) Co. Ltd. the Product Division Alvedoor Marine established itself. The group now has two production sites, one in China and one in Germany.

In 2014, Bilfinger Berger AG hands over the trademark rights to the “Rheinhold & Mahla” brand to the R&M Group. Just one year later, the R&M Group takes over KLH AirCon International, Inc. and renames it to R&M AirCon International, Inc. In 2015 the group took over the company Sea Level Marine, LLC, based in Miami and renamed it to R&M Sea Level Marine, LLC. The divisions in the USA and South America are now closed again. In 2016 the R&M Group founded a new subsidiary, R&M Marine Engineering Services India Pvt. Ltd. based in Chennai (India) and takes over the KLH Group from Bad Doberan in order to bundle its HVAC competencies.
