R: base

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

R: Base is a database software . It was the first relational database for PCs .

history

The original R: Base database program was written on a self-made Heathkit CPM computer. On November 13, 1981 , brothers Wayne Erickson and Ron Erickson founded MicroRim, Inc. to market the product, RIM being short for Relational Information Management . Erickson developed the mainframe version of RIM ( Relational Information Manager ) for Boeing Computer Services. RIM was used by NASA , among others, for the structured recording of the heat shield tiles of their space shuttles .

R: BASE 4000

The first version 1.0 from 1983 did not contain a programming language . The File Gateway utility was used to import and export popular file formats such as Data Interchange Format (DIF), SYLK , Lotus 1-2-3 and dBase DBF. The Japanese version supports the Kanji character set.

R: BASE 5000 (2.0)

With this version, over 640 KB of memory and the Intel 80286 processor could be used. In the 1980s, R: BASE was also marketed in Europe under the name Microsoft Rbase System . In 1985 there was an edition (multi-user) for multi-user systems.

R: BASE System V (2.1)

For the first time, a subset of the Structured Query Language ( SQL ) was implemented.

R: BASE 3.x

R: Base 3.0 followed ANSI SQL (1989) and used the DOS4GW memory management . There was also an edition for the CTOS operating system .

R: BASE 4.0

The development group now used the WATCOM C386 compiler instead of the previous Microsoft C compiler .

R: BASE 6.x

The development company Microrim was closed on March 13, 1998. The newly founded company R: BASE Technologies, Inc. from Murrysville (Pennsylvania, USA) acquired the R: BASE product line from the Abacus Software Group (ASG) in June 1998.

R: Base offers its own 4GL programming platform, a built-in SQL console, multi-user capability, its own form, report, label and application generators and many more features.

R: BASE 7.x / 8.x

Further development to version 7. First publication on September 21, 2003. The simultaneous operation of DOS and Windows applications on the same database will be continued. From November 2nd, 2011, a 64-bit version 8.0 Turbo will also be offered in parallel to the 32-bit version 7.6. The 32-bit version runs on all Windows and DOS operating systems and uses normal Windows file handling. it is therefore limited to a database size of maximum 2GB. The 64-bit version also runs on all Windows and DOS operating systems and uses its own addressing for file handling, which allows databases of up to 2.3 million TB. In addition, queries and updates are significantly faster than with the 32-bit version.

R: BASE 9.x 32/64-bit

Further development to version 9.0 / 9.1. and 9.5. First publication on May 11, 2010. The 32-bit version runs on all Windows and DOS operating systems and uses normal Windows file handling. it is therefore limited to a database size of maximum 2GB.

R: BASE 10, X and XE

Further development to version X / XE (Enterprise). The kernel has been completely redesigned. First publication on September 24, 2015. R: BASE now supports UNICode. In addition, a lot has again been invested in comfort, user feeling and autonomous operation. The Enterprise Version (XE) is the 64-bit edition and also offers: data types BIGINT, SMALLINT, BOOLEAN, BIGNUM, BSTR, 64-bit ODBC driver, OnDisconnect commands. Version XE is now available again as a German-language version. Both user interface and kernel messages have been translated.
