Rádio Despertar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rádio Despertar is a radio broadcaster in Angola . Along with the church broadcaster Rádio Ecclesia , it is the only radio station in the south-west African country that is not controlled by the government or the ruling MPLA party or business people close to them. It broadcasts in Portuguese and in the local language Umbundu , which is spoken by the largest population group, the Ovimbundu .

history

The station was founded in 2002 on the basis of the peace agreement between the ruling MPLA and the opposition UNITA . It is operated by UNITA as the successor to "Rádio VORGAN". Rádio Vorgan was a radio broadcaster that broadcasted underground propaganda against the MPLA during the Angola Civil War , but also acted as a means of communication with the population of the UNITA-controlled areas.

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung supports the broadcaster in developing as a private, commercial broadcast medium. Program training sessions are sponsored.

On September 5, 2010, one of Rádio Despertar's moderators, the journalist Alberto Chakusanga , was shot dead by strangers in his home in Viana . He was the first journalist since 2001 to be killed in Angola. On October 22, 2010, another radio station employee was stabbed by four strangers while on his way home from work. He was badly injured but survived. These incidents are seen by observers as part of the attacks on journalists critical of the government.

On July 13, 2011, Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke to journalists from Rádio Despertar during her one-day visit to Angola to find out more about the situation of civil society in Angola.
