The Réserve écologique des Vieux-Arbres is a 3.64 hectare protected area in the west of the Canadian province of Québec , which includes three islands in Lac Duparquet .
As part of the province's protected area system, the park protects the populations of the Occidental Tree of Life , which are more than 800 years old and are considered the oldest specimens of this species in eastern North America. However, they are only 4.6 m high on average and develop predominantly crippled forms. Fires seem to play an important role in their survival.
In addition to the outstanding species, there are mainly Banks pines and American red pines ( Pinus resinosa Aiton ), but also paper birch and black spruce .
Dendrochronological studies have shown that there was a period of considerable drought in the summers in the 13th century, and that humidity has been increasing since the end of the 19th century.
