The Río Frío is a river in northern Costa Rica , in the province of Alajuela . The last kilometers before the mouth it flows through Nicaraguan national territory.

It rises at the foot of the Tenorio volcano , flows through the lagoon of the Caño Negro nature reserve and flows into Lake Nicaragua , directly at its outflow into the Río San Juan .
