history

The original parish church at a different location, mentioned in a document in 985, was demolished in 1792. In a document (1082) the double parish Behamberg ( parish church Behamberg ) and Weistrach ( parish church Weistrach ) went to Bishop Altmann von Passau (1015-1091) in exchange for Garsten .

The former monastery church of the monastery founded in 1082 by Otakar I von Steyr as a collegiate monastery and settled in 1108 with Otakar II with Benedictines from the Göttweig monastery suffered fires in 1219 and 1494 and subsequent rebuilding. The monastery church was rebuilt in 1616 with Abbot Anton II. Spindler. 1677, both the monastery as well as the church was demolished and under Abbot Roman Rauscher (1642-1683) and Abbot Anselm Angerer (1683-1715) and to 1685 for the time being by Pietro Francesco Carlone and his sons Carlo Antonio Carlone and Giovanni Batista Carlone completely newly built. Bernhard Spaz (foreman), Peter Magnus Roß (stonemason), Johann Jakob Canevale and Johann Baptist Spaz (stonemason) were also involved in the construction. The church was consecrated in 1693 and is considered an important testimony to the baroque architecture of the 17th century in Austria. In 1787 the monastery was closed and the monastery church became a parish church.

architecture

The church is in the style of the Jesuit Church of St. Michael in Munich, but without transepts and with two facade towers - in direct reference to the Old Cathedral and Jesuit Church in Linz. The high four-bay vaulted nave has three chapels on each side and galleries above them. In the west yoke is a three-axis gallery. There is a tomb under the nave. The retracted two-bay stab cap barrel vaulted choir has a straight ending. The west facade with two towers with spiers with a lantern shows the year 1687 on the portal. The west facade with a composite pilaster arrangement bears the figures Berthold, Otakar and his wife Elisabeth in niches and in the gable Maria Immaculata, all by the sculptor Marian Rittinger.
