Giovanni Battista Carlone (plasterer)
Giovanni Battista Carlone (* between 1640 and 1642 in Scaria ; † between 1718 and 1721 in Scaria) was an Italian plasterer and sculptor from the Carlone family of artists . He should not be confused with the architect of the same name (1580 / 90–1645) or the painter of the same name .
Life
The son of the master builder Pietro Francesco Carlone and Giulia Orsolini and brother of Carlo Antonio Carlone can be traced back to Upper Styria from 1673. Since 1677 he was in charge, presumably introduced by his father in Passau , and following an activity in the construction of the Jesuit church St. Michael, he was in charge of the stucco decoration of the newly built Passau Cathedral since 1668 . The high artistic status of the Baroqueization of Passau Cathedral results from the close collaboration between Carlone and the cathedral builder Carlo Lurago , both of whom came from the Upper Italian Intelvi Valley . Carlone worked in Passau for 18 years, as well as in Austria and the Upper Palatinate. He signed 13 contracts in which he undertook to design the interior of the Passau Cathedral.
In the spring of 1682 he began as principal with the stuccoing of the collegiate church of Garsten Abbey , which had been built by his brother according to his father's plans since 1679.
In 1683 Carlone made the two monumental stucco figures of the diocesan saints Valentin and Maximilian for the choir of Passau Cathedral . The huge transept altars (the northern one in 1685, the southern one in 1687/88) were completed during the reign of the Passau Prince-Bishop Sebastian Graf von Pötting. Between 1690 and 1695 the side altars followed in the nave chapels, which contribute significantly to the overall decoration of the cathedral.
On August 26, 1689, the new Passau prince-bishop Johann Philipp von Lamberg mentioned him in a letter to the provost of Stift Reichersberg and brought him back to Passau, where he was employed most of the time. From 1696 he worked in the Upper Palatinate and large parts of Bavaria. The style of high baroque stucco decoration he influenced is known as "carlonesk". This prefers heavy, figural and vegetal components worked in strong relief with cornucopia, bunches of fruit and cherub heads in mostly white stone color.
Carlone was married to Taddea Maddalena de Allio. He is the father of the plasterer Diego Francesco Carlone (1674–1750) and the painter Carlo Innocenzo Carlone (1686–1775).
On February 4, 1708 he gave his will to the Fiscal of Lugano. It is not known if it was the last.
