Valentin of Raetia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Valentin von Raetia (* before 435 ; † around 475 in Mais, near today's Meran ) was one of the first bishops of Passau .

Life

Valentin lived at the time of the Great Migration in the 5th century. Of Dutch origin, he came to Passau around 435. He was ordained bishop by Pope Leo the Great and installed as bishop of Raetia , an area between St. Gotthard , Chur , Brixen , Regensburg and Passau. He strove for the mission of the local population, who were already Christian, but because of the circumstances of the time they mixed up with paganism or adhered to Arian doctrine . However, his efforts were unsuccessful. He was finally chased out of Passau, then led a life as a traveling missionary and died around 475 as a hermit on the Zenoberg in Mais Castle . Here he was first buried before he was brought to Trient and later to Passau.
