The two-tower, clearly structured church complex was built in 1677 after the previous building was a victim of the city fire of 1662. The builder is Pietro Francesco Carlone . The Xaveri Chapel , dedicated to St. Francisco de Xavier is dedicated.

In the simple interior, the opulent stucco work by Giovanni Battista Carlone from the years 1675 to 1677 stands out. The six side altars date from 1678, the pulpit from 1715 to 1720.

The high altar was built in 1712 by Jakob Pawanger based on a design by the Jesuit Christoph Tausch . The angel figures were created by Diego Carlone , the stucco work a. a. Ignaz Albrecht Provisore , the altarpiece depicting the fall of the angel , was painted by Carlo Innocenzo Carlone in 1714 .

The previous building of today's church was located further north in Michaeligasse and was originally surrounded by a cemetery. The exact location of this church can no longer be reconstructed today. This church was first mentioned in a document in 1301. In the course of the founding of the Jesuit College, this church was left to the order, but it soon became apparent that it did not meet its requirements. The original plan was to build the new church as the final north wing of the Jesuit college. The building of the former Catholic Philosophical-Theological University (today: Department for Catholic Theology, which is integrated into the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Passau ) stands at this point . After the town fire of 1662, the old church was demolished before the new building was completed, which was finally to the west of the college. Between 1616 and 1677 the Jesuits also used an emergency church in the basement of the college building, which today serves as a storage room.
