Giovanni Battista Carlone (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Battista Carlone (* 1592, 1594 or February 16, 1603 in Genoa ; † 1659, 1677 [in Turin], 1680, 1683 or 1684 in Parodi Ligure , Piedmont) was a Genoese painter.

biography

Carlone was a son of the Lombard sculptor Taddeo Carlone (1543-1613 / 1615) from Rovio , who also taught him at the beginning. He received his further training from Domenico Passignano and in Rome. His brother is the well-known painter Giovanni Carlone (1590–1630), with whom he worked. Their painting style is very similar, so that a clear assignment of the works to one of the two brothers is not always possible.

After his death he completed the painting of the Theatin Church in Milan, which he had begun . He created oil and fresco paintings in the Basilica of Santissima Annunziata del Vastato in Genoa. He later worked for Emanuel Philibert , Duke of Savoy and his son Charles Emanuel I , where most of his works can be found. Giovanni Carlone from Rovio was one of his students .
