The Río Gallegos is a river in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz in Patagonia . The capital of the province of the same name, Río Gallegos, is located at its estuary ( ria ) .
The river arises at the confluence of the Río Rubens and Río Penitentes near the Chilean border and flows into the Atlantic Ocean after 180 km .
On its way east, the Río Gallegos has the tributaries Río Turbio , Río Cóndor , and Río Zurdo . During the dry season, the river is often just a trickle.
The river was named after Blasco Gallegos , one of the pilots of the Magellanic Expedition in 1520 , and is now known as a destination for fly fishermen who catch trout here.
