Roman Museum

The Roman Museum Augst (alternative names: Augusta Raurica ; Roman house and museum ; Roman town Augusta Raurica ) is an archaeological museum and open-air museum in the municipality of Augst in the canton of Basel-Landschaft in Switzerland . It is subordinate to the Office for Culture of the Education, Culture and Sports Directorate of the Canton of Basel-Landschaft.

The museum houses the most important finds from the excavations in Kaiseraugst and Augst and conveys the rich history of the Roman city ​​of Augusta Raurica . In addition to the museum, there are other exhibition rooms and more than twenty open-air locations in the entire area of ​​the municipalities of Kaiseraugst and Augst . The most important exhibit is the silver treasure from Kaiseraugst .

Thanks to the donation of a Basel patron , a Roman house next to the museum was reconstructed on a 1: 1 scale in 1954/1955 and completely furnished with original objects or copies from Roman times. Since the construction of a complete four-block of houses, an insula , was out of the question for financial reasons, it was limited to a representative section, namely a house with commercial shops facing the street and private rooms behind:

• Commercial part (towards the street):
  • larger commercial space (with forge and butcher)
  • Thermopolium (fast food)
  • In front of this shop front there is a columned hall as a sidewalk.
• Private rooms:
  • U-shaped peristyle (pillared hall; inner part planted)
  • Kitchen with stove, oven and Roman toilet
  • Triclinium (dining room) with a brick bed
  • Bathroom with four rooms:
    • Apodyterium (changing room)
    • Frigidarium (cold water room)
    • Tepidarium (warm water room)
    • Caldarium (hot water room with hypocaust heating)
  • Workspace
