Roman Catholic Cathedral of Banjul
The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Banjul (also English Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption , called Assumption ) is a church building of the Roman Catholic Church in the Gambian capital Banjul .
description
It is located on Hagan Street at the corner of Picton Street , where it dominates the street scene. It is larger than the Anglican cathedral . The church was built during the colonial times of Gambia from 1913 to 1916. It was given cathedral status when Bathurst, the former name of Banjul, was elevated to a diocese in 1957. This makes the cathedral the seat of the Banjul diocese .
During his trip through Senegal, Gambia and Guinea, Pope John Paul II met with Gambian priests in the cathedral on February 23, 1992.
