history

The diocese was founded on May 6, 1931 as Mission sui juris and, after it had become the Apostolic Prefecture of Bathurst in Gambia on March 8, 1951 , on June 24, 1957, it was elevated to the position of Bathurst in Gambia. On May 9, 1974, after the name of the capital was changed, the name was changed to the Diocese of Banjul.

The area is an old mission area of ​​the Spiritan Fathers , who still provide the bishop of the diocese today. It covers the entire country of Gambia (11,295 km²) and in 2006 had around 42,400 Catholics. Banjul has had local diocesan priests since the 1980s, in 2002 there were 13, so that one is no longer solely dependent on the twelve religious priests, most of whom come from abroad. Furthermore , eleven lay brothers and 45 religious sisters live in the 56 parishes of the diocese .

Bishops
