Robert Patrick Ellison CSSp (born February 12, 1942 in Blackrock , County Dublin , Ireland ) is Irish Roman Catholic Bishop of Banjul in The Gambia .

Life

Robert Ellison was born in Blackrock, Ireland, the youngest of Charles and Agnes Ellison's six children. He still has four brothers and one sister.

He attended Blackrock College as a day student from 1954 to 1959 and then entered the novitiate of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in Kilshane , County Tipperary . In 1960 he took his first vows. He studied philosophy at Kimmage Manor until he enrolled at University College Dublin where he studied math , chemistry and botany . In 1965 he received a bachelor's degree in natural sciences (B.Sc.).

He then spent a year as prefect at Blackrock College , where he gained his first experience as a teacher and supervisor for boarding school students. He then began studying theology at the Gregorian University in Rome and obtained a licentiate ( Sacrae Theologiae Licentiatus (STL)) in dogmatics . In 1968 he made perpetual vows . He was ordained a priest on July 6, 1969 at Kimmage Manor, Dublin, by the Archbishop of Dublin, Charles McQuaid , CSSp .

After his ordination he was sent to the mission in Banjul, Gambia. From 1970 to 1974 he was a missionary in Gambia and dedicated himself to pastoral activities in education and in parishes. Until July 1971 he taught at the »St. Augustine's High School «in Banjul, since May 1971 he was administrator of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Banjul .

From 1972 to 1973 he attended lectures at the Pontifical Institute for Islamic Studies ( Pontificio Istituto di Studi Arabi e d'Islamistica , PISAI). From 1974 to 1980 he headed the Philosophy Formation House in Ireland. From 1981 to 1984 he worked again as a missionary in Gambia in the field of education, interreligious dialogue and ecumenism.

From 1985 to 1991 he was superior of the Spiritane District of Gambia, from 1991 to 1993 teacher at the Institute of St. Anselm in Kent, England and from 1993 to 1999 director of the Gambia Pastoral Institute (GPI) in Banjul. Since 1999 he has been general secretary of the Congregation of Spiritans in Rome.

On February 25, 2006 he was appointed Bishop of Banjul to succeed Michael J. Clearys CSSp, who had submitted his resignation after reaching the age limit , and was consecrated on May 14, 2006 by Bishop Cleary. Ellison is the fifth bishop of Banjul, all of whom were members of the Spiritan Congregation.

Ellison received the Order of Commander (CRG) in May 2009.
