Roman bath ruins Baden-Baden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roman bath ruins in the old town of Baden-Baden , remains of ancient thermal baths , are located below the market square and at the Friedrichsbad .

The imperial baths, which were luxuriously expanded on behalf of the Roman emperor Caracalla in AD 213–217 , are located on the terraced southern slope of the Schlossberg under today's market square between the collegiate church and the old steam bath. They were discovered in 1847 during construction work on the collegiate church. The magnificent complex included two pools, which may have been used to cool the thermal water, two bathing pools and a hot-air room. Their shape and dimensions are made clear on the market square by black cobblestones.

At the foot of the Schlossberg, the soldiers' baths, which were much more simply equipped, were set up with a hot bath, a warm air bath, an air sweat bath and several swimming pools. The so-called hypocaust system of underfloor and wall heating in these baths was excavated and preserved between 1846 and 1900. It is accessible in a museum below the Friedrichsbad terrace between Friedrichsbad and the monastery school of the Holy Sepulcher and can be viewed from outside through a glass front.
