The reddish fat- tailed lemur ( Cheirogaleus crossleyi ), also called Crossley-fat-tailed lemur , is a primate species from the lemur group . It has been considered a separate species from the fat-tailed brown lemur since 2000 .

features

Reddish fat-tailed lemurs reach a head body length of 22 to 26 centimeters and a tail length of 21 to 27 centimeters. The weight is 370 to 458 grams and is probably subject to seasonal fluctuations. Their fur is colored reddish-brown on the back, the underside is light gray. The head is rounded, the eyes are surrounded by conspicuous black circles under the eyes, the ears are covered with dark fur on the inside and outside.

Habitat and way of life

Like all lemurs, reddish fat-tailed lemurs are only found in Madagascar . The range is fragmented and not well known. It is further west and thus more inland from the distribution area of the great fat- tailed lemur ( Cheirogaleus major ). Among other things, the reddish fat-tailed lemur was found at Lake Alaotra , in Andasibe-Mantadia National Park , in Imerina and in the north near Sambava and Vohémar .

The habitat consists of rainforests up to an altitude of 1800 meters. The animals are absent in forests and plantations that have been severely affected by humans. Otherwise, little is known about their way of life, presumably it corresponds to that of the Big Fat-Tailed Maki . As a result, they are nocturnal tree dwellers that hibernate in a nest in the dry season from April to September . To do this, they put a reserve of fat in their tail in the rainy season. The use of a tree cavity was only observed once.

Danger

The degree of endangerment is unclear, the IUCN lists the species under “too little data available” ( data deficient ). The reddish fat-tailed lemur is found in three national parks, Andasibe-Mantadia, Ranomafana and Zahamena .
