The Norwegian noble family of Rømer is divided into two lines, Rømer I (older branch) and Rømer II (younger branch). It is said to have descended from the Reymar family from Mecklenburg . Rømer I is said to have immigrated to Norway in the 14th century and died out before 1435.

The earliest members mentioned include the Reichsrat Otte Rømer (around 1330 — around 1411) and his son, the Reichsrat Svale Otteson Rømer (around 1363 — after 1415). The councilor in Bergen Henrikt Henningsson, mentioned in a document in 1389, was the father of Archbishop Aslak Bolt .

Otte Rømer's daughter was married to Jakob Fastulfsson. Their descendants are called the "Younger Rømer" (Rømer II). However, they did not use the gender name themselves. Her son Mats Jakobsson († after 1455) was Sysselmann and Imperial Councilor . He had the children Jakob, Otte and Gertrud. Gertrud married the Swedish imperial councilor Nils Jönsson Posse and became the ancestor of the noble Posse family. Otte Matsson († around 1510) was a member of the Norwegian Imperial Council and at the end of the 15th century the commander of Bergenshus Fortress . His son Olav Ottesen († around 1513) was the last male descendant of the sex. The daughter Ingerd Ottesdotter married Nils Henriksson , called Gyldenlöve.
