In November 1984 Naumann had to start his military service, but was given the opportunity to continue to play football in the second-rate GDR league with the army sports community Vorwärts Dessau . In the official squad he was listed as a midfielder. He stayed with the forward team beyond conscription and moved to the successor community SG Dessau 89 after their dissolution.
