REM Irving

Ronald "Ronnie" Eckford Mill Irving (born July 14, 1939 ), REM Irving for short , is a British political scientist at the University of Edinburgh . His research focus is Western European politics, in particular the history of the Christian Democratic parties in France and Germany.

Irving studied at Oxford , where he obtained his doctorate in 1968 with the dissertation The MRP and French policy in Indochina, 1945-54 . After a short stay as a lecturer at the University of Bristol , he moved to Edinburgh. He was a lecturer here from 1969 to 1982 and reader in the Department of Politics from 1982 to 2001 ; since 2001 he has been an Honorary Fellow .

He wrote numerous publications in the course of his academic career; four of his works have been published as a book: Christian Democracy in France (1973) on the MRP , The First Indochina War: French and American Policy in Vietnam, 1945-54 (1975) on French politics and diplomacy during the Indochina War , The Christian Democratic Parties of Western Europe (1979) on behalf of the Royal Institute of International Affairs and Adenauer (2002). With the other writing The Flemings and Walloons of Belgium (1980) he dealt with the Flemish-Walloons conflict .
