The former archdeaconate is a listed building in St.-Marien-Kirchhof 3 in Wismar in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The former administration and residential building of the archdeacon was built in the style of the north German brick Gothic .

History and architecture

The two-storey brick building was erected in the middle of the 15th century as the chapel of Our Lady, based on the example of the old school , which was destroyed in 1945, probably based on plans by H. Münster. Dendrochronological studies in 2008 and 2009 showed that construction began shortly after 1400 and not, as previously assumed, in the middle of the 15th century. The building, which was restored from 1880 to 1885 on the initiative of Johann Joachim Hartwig Meyer , was originally twice as long.

It was badly damaged in the Second World War in 1945 and rebuilt from 1962 to 1963 according to old plans, the southern gable was supplemented in a simplified form. The windows on the ground floor are located in segmented arched niches that are decorated with tracery above . The six-axis eaves side on the upper floor is divided into blind niches by small windows. The arcature of the eaves was covered with battlements . The three-part stepped gable on the north side is also crowned with battlements. The windows on the upper floor are drawn into the panel structure . The rich building decor consists mainly of glazed bricks and shaped stones . During the renovation, the entrance and the stairwell were relocated from their original location, and solid ceilings and partition walls were newly inserted into the interior. The interior of the archdeaconate now houses the state superintendent of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mecklenburg and a meeting place for children and young people. In addition to the Marienkirche tower , the Archidiakonatshaus is the last medieval building on Marienkirchplatz.
