The story is about a young man who is initially only known as RASL . He has the ability to make dimensional leaps with the help of special equipment. He uses this opportunity to hire himself out as an art thief. During one of his raids, he is confronted with a mysterious stranger who attacks him and henceforth pursues him. In regular flashbacks, the reader learns more about the past of RASL and the origin of his equipment.
In an interview with Jeff Smith on A3UPodcast, he mentions that these dimensional leaps have in some ways to do with the RASL's state of mind . In order to jump, the protagonist has to be very instinctive: drinking, gambling and other things, in order to return to his own dimension, he has to behave very meditatively, almost like a Zen Buddhist .
