REWE Team Challenge
The REWE Team Challenge Dresden is a running event and is one of the largest company runs in Germany. It is held and organized by Laufszene Events GmbH from Dresden. Teams of 4 people, but also individual starters, can register for the popular sports event. The distance to be covered is 5 kilometers.
History of the REWE Team Challenge
The first REWE Team Challenge started in 2009 with 1,743 participants from 185 companies gathered in one wave. The runners started at the Kulturpalast , the finish was in the Rudolf Harbig Stadium . At the end of the event there was a laser show in the stadium . In the following year, the number of participants more than doubled - there were 3,580 starters. In the years that followed, up to 2015, the number of participants increased more than sevenfold. In this context, the REWE Team Challenge celebrated a premiere and started for the first time in three waves of 4,500 participants. Starting at 7 p.m., the starting guns for the respective starting waves were given every 45 minutes. Due to the increasing number of participants, the three subsequent years started in four waves, but every half hour, starting at 7 p.m. While the REWE Team Challenge again reported a record number of participants in 2016 with 16,000 participants, this increased steadily in the following years to a total of 20,000 participants in 2018. With the 10th anniversary of the REWE Team Challenge 2018, further premieres were celebrated. The laser show from previous years was replaced by fireworks at the end. A special highlight was a new world record in reverse running , the REWE Team Challenge - set up by Thomas Dold . For the new world record in running backwards over 5 km, Dold started ten minutes before the first wave of the start. The goal was to finish before the first forward runner and to beat the existing record of Brian Godsey from the USA with a time of 19:31 minutes. For the record attempt, Dold was accompanied by three cyclists, including a signpost and a notary. Before the first forward runner, Thomas Dold was the first (backward) runner to reach the goal of the 5 km run with a time of 19:07 minutes and thus undercut the existing world record by 24 seconds.
