RIH is a Dutch bicycle brand.

history

The company was founded in 1921 by the brothers Joop and Willem Bustraan in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam and began manufacturing racing bikes on the Eerste Boomdwarsstraat there and from 1928 on the Westerstraat . Joop Bustraan himself was also active as a cyclist and pacemaker .

RIH gained some notoriety as a number of racing cyclists used racing bikes from this manufacturer. By 2011, 63 world championship and Olympic titles had been won with bikes of this brand. With the advent of the large, sponsored cycling teams , the successes became less. From then on, the sponsor decided on the type of material used and no longer the individual driver himself.

Thanks to a close connection to the Dutch cycling association Koninklijke Nederlandsche Wielren Unie (KNWU), in which RIH acted as a material sponsor between 1989 and 1996, the company was able to build on its old successes; in 1990 Leontien van Moorsel achieved her first world title in the single pursuit . Ingrid Haringa became world champion in sprint in 1991 and world champion in points race in 1991, 1993 and 1994 .

In 1972 RIH entered into a collaboration with the Covè bicycle factory in Venlo . This gave Covè the right to market bicycles with the name RIH. Bicycle frames and racing bikes are still built in the factory buildings in Amsterdam to this day.

Trivia

The name RIH goes back to the character of the horse Rih from the novels by Karl May .
