Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) is a Dutch authority for public health and environmental protection . The RIVM is an independent research institute under the Ministry of Health, Public Welfare and Sport and is based in Bilthoven . The RIVM, which was formed from a merger in 1984, has around 1600 employees. The institute carries out commissioned and independent research and collects scientific knowledge from around the world. In addition to Dutch ministries, the clients include the European Union , the World Health Organization and the United Nations .

tasks

The tasks of the RIVM include supporting political decisions to protect the health of the population and to protect the environment. The RIVM reports regularly on the state and future developments in the areas of health, infectious diseases and the environment. It coordinates and accompanies state prevention campaigns, for example on recommended vaccinations , healthy eating and exercise or against smoking. In the event of chemical and biological accidents, the RIVM has the laboratories and the expertise that are necessary for professional action. The RIVM also takes part in international collaborations and research.
