RM Austria - mother-of-pearl design

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The company RM Austria - Mother Design in Felling (municipality Hardegg , Lower Austria ) is the last Perlmuttdrechslerei Austria whose six to eight employees (previously about 30 people) per year processed about 20 tons of shells and about 400,000 euros revenue earned annually.

This mother-of-pearl turnery was founded by Rudolf Marchart in Felling in 1911 and originally processed mother- of- pearl from shells from Thaya and March . Meanwhile, the raw material comes from Indonesia , Japan , Mexico , New Zealand and Australia .

At the time it was founded, there were a large number of such companies throughout Austria, but also in Hardegg. After the Second World War, there were still 98 such craft businesses in Austria. The beginning of the production of buttons made of plastic not only reduced the number of mother-of-pearl turneries, but also the number of employees here.

Traditionally, buttons are still made with a lot of manual labor (around 2.5 million pieces per year), which are mainly purchased by national and international traditional clothing and knitwear companies, but also by made-to-measure shirt manufacturers.

For some years now, however, jewelry and ornaments and utensils have also been produced, which provide an additional economic pillar.
