Rabelo on the Rio Douro

Rabelo is the name of a type of boat that was used in Portugal to transport wine barrels. The boats drove from the cultivation area on the upper Douro to the port wine production facilities in Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia . Most of the time the rabelos only drifted with the current of the river, sailing was rare. The boats were mostly hauled up the river .

Nowadays the boats have lost their original purpose and are only touristy. They either lie in front of the port wine cellars, on both sides of the Douro, or take part in historical regattas .
