Racó Català

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Racó Català (Catalan Corner) is a website that uses the Catalan language only . It is made by Tirabol Produccions and it started on March 4, 1999. It was founded by Joan Camp , Oriol Morell and Guillem Sureda who were college students. The website promotes Catalan independence from Spain and it has no relationship with any political party. It deals with cultural, social or general issues from all Catalan countries . She also has many online campaigns for the defense of the Catalan language. At the beginning of 2013 it had more than 20,000 registered users and almost 5 million messages were posted on its interactive Internet forum. In February 2013 it was ranked as the sixth most visited digital newspaper among the Catalan language websites measured by the OJD . It then also had 330,000 unique monthly visitors. In September 2015, it received 418,747 one-time visitors to the OJD.

After ETA's terrorist attacks in Burgos and Majorca during the summer of 2009, Racó Català endured a campaign of insult by a few right-wing extremist Spanish media and internet forums that linked Racó Català's nationalism and struggle for independence from Catalonia with the defense of terrorism.

The Racó Català organization has received subsidies from the communications media department of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan regional government). They are members of the Catalan Society of Free Newspapers . The digital journalist Saül Gordillo published in Racó Català the most important articles from his blog from May 23, 2006 to June 2009. In 2007 Racó Català was awarded the Jaume I Prize by the cultural institution of Franja de Ponent , and in April In 2013 they were awarded the Joan Coromines Prize by the Coordinated Association for the Catalan Language.
