Rachael Mendy

Rachael Y. Mendy ( Rachael Yvonne Mendy Mboge ; also: Rachel ) is a Gambian lawyer.

Life

In 1994 she was admitted to the bar and from October 1994 she was employed as Junior Counsel in the law firm of Basangsang Chambers of the lawyer and opposition politician Ousainou Darboe ( UDP ) . From 1996 to 1999 she lived in the UK with her husband. After returning, she worked again for Darboe until 2007. In May 2007 she opened her own law firm, RYM Legal Services, in the Gambian capital of Banjul .

From at least March 2017 she was chairwoman of the Gambia Bar Association (GBA). In a speech at the beginning of February 2019, in her role as President of the GBA, she criticized Adama Barrow's efforts to establish the youth movement Barrow Youth Movement (Barrow Youth for National Development). These statements met with harsh criticism, as the GBA had thus positioned itself politically. In mid-February 2019, Salieu Taal was elected as her successor as chairman.
