In the biography of Uri Avnery (Kaufhold, 2003) it is noted about her getting to know each other: “... There were violent arguments about Avnery's sheet ( haOlam haZeh ), which z. Some were carried out militantly: it survived three bomb attacks on the editorial office and printing plant, numerous successfully suppressed criminal prosecution proceedings for rioting, two murder attacks. In 1953, a stranger attacked Avnery and broke both of his hands and fingers. But even this traumatic stroke of fate found a positive turn for Avnery: Rachel, who fled Germany to Palestine with her parents at the age of one and still speaks German, looked after him - and became his wife: 'We have five years in sin lived and then married. I think we're pretty much the only Israeli couple I know who are not divorced. '"

In 1993 she and her husband Uri Avnery founded the Israeli peace initiative Gusch Schalom , in 2001 they both received the Right Livelihood Award for it . She died on May 21, 2011 after a long illness in Tel Aviv.
