Rachel Somerville

Rachel Somerville (* around 1967) is an American astrophysicist .

Somerville received her bachelor's degree in physics from Reed College in Portland, Oregon in 1989 and her PhD from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1997 . She was a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and has been Downsbrough Professor of Astrophysics at Rutgers University since 2011 .

She is concerned with the theory of formation and evolution and the observation of early galaxies (having participated in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS)). Somerville is an expert in semi-analytical modeling of galaxy formation in a cosmological context. She heads the theory group for CANDELS at the Hubble Space Telescope .

In 2013 she received the Dannie Heineman Prize for Astrophysics .
