Racoviță (family)
The Racoviță (also: Racovitza , Racovita ) were a partially Hellenized family of boyars from Moldavia and Wallachia , who were one of the most influential aristocratic families of the Danube principalities in the 17th century and the Gospodar (Romanian Domnitor ) several times in the 18th century . They succeeded in penetrating the circle of the Phanariotes in Constantinople , whereby they could win the throne of their home countries and maintain this position.
Well-known members of the Racoviță family
- Ana Racoviță , wife of the French doctor and physicist Carol Davila and mother of Alexandru Davila , writer, diplomat and close friend of King Carol I. She tragically died on January 14, 1874 due to a drug mix-up.
- Aurel Racovitză (1890–1957), Romanian diplomat and general
- Constantin Racoviță : son of Mihai Racoviță, ruler of Moldavia (1749–1753, 1756–1757) and ruler of Wallachia (1753–1756, 1763–1764)
- Emil Racoviță (1868–1947), biologist, marine researcher, botanist and is considered the founder of biospeleology
- Ioan Mihail Racoviță (1889–1954), Romanian general of the 4th Army in Operation Jassy-Kishinev , Minister of Defense from August 23 to November 4, 1944, arrested in June 1950. He died on June 28, 1954 in Sighet prison
- Mihai Racoviță : was three times ruler of Moldova (1703–1705, 1707–1709 and 1716–1726) and twice ruler of Wallachia (1730–1731 and 1741–1744)
- Osvald Racoviță lawyer and politician, Mayor of Iași (1927–1929, 1934–1938). He died in 1974 after years of imprisonment and persecution by the communist rulers.
- Nicolae Gr. Racoviță (1835-1894), Romanian politician and minister.
- Nicolae A. Racoviță (1887–1948,) doctor and politician, 1918 mayor of Iași.
- Ștefan Racoviță : son of Mihai Racoviță, ruler of Wallachia (1764–1765)
