Rad Racer ( Japanese : ハ イ ウ ェ イ ス タ ー , Hepburn : Haiwei Sutā , "Highway Star") is a racing game developed by the Japanese developer Square and for the Nintendo Family Computer (Famicom) in Japan and the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was released in North America and Europe. The game sold almost 2 million times worldwide and is viewed by many critics as one of the best racing games for the Famicom and the NES.
The game was part of an attempt by Square to equip games with a function for 3D by means of specially designed glasses that are included in the scope of delivery . This feature could be activated by pressing the Select button on the NES controller and was later used for other games.
The game was also built into the PlayChoice-10 arcade machine .
Gameplay
In Rad Racer the player can choose between a Ferrari 328 and a Formula 1 car. The aim of the game is to complete as many races as possible in a given time. If this does not succeed, the game starts from the beginning ( gameover ).
