The Radetzkybrücke is a road bridge from 1898 over the Mur in Graz , Austria . It connects the districts of Innere Stadt and Gries and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage City of Graz - Historic Center and Eggenberg Castle .

history

When the Jakomini suburb was built in Graz from 1786 , another bridge was needed over the Mur to provide a better connection with the Gries district. Until then, ferries were used for crossings. This is how the “New Bridge” was built in 1787 as the forerunner of today's Radetzky Bridge. It was made of wood. In 1827 the structure was destroyed by floods. However, the follow-up solution was unsatisfactory. The pedestrian access from the Gries side was considered impractical. It was requested that a new bridge should no longer be made of wood, but of "stone and iron" (Grazer Volksblatt 1888). Not only the footpath, but also the roadway should be widened from 6.20 m to 7 m; so it was decided at the council meeting on April 11, 1892. The start of construction was set for the spring of 1894.

Before the new construction could begin, the wooden, old bridge was provided with new boards again in 1893, because the construction cost of 130,000 florins was only available for the construction period 1894 to 1895. The construction was already more expensive than estimated in advance. The municipality of Graz paid an additional 44,000 florins in two annual installments of 22,0000 florins and was relieved of a contribution to the maintenance of the new property forever.

Today's bridge

In the years 1897/1898, today's Radetzky Bridge was finally built from steel. The total cost of 160,542 guilders was borne by the state of Austria, the state of Styria and the city of Graz, one third each. A continuous beam with a central support was used as the construction. The stone-built central pillar was founded on gravel at a depth of 7 m using air pressure. The landside foundations extend to a depth of 3 m. The civil engineering work was the responsibility of the construction company, Brüder Redlich and Berger , and the design and execution of the iron structure for the Austrian Alpine Assembly (ge) company . The following values were used as a basis for the load calculation: a road load from a truck weighing 20 tons, surrounded by trucks weighing 12 tons, plus a load from people of 460 kg per square meter on the sidewalks. Finally, on August 13, 1898, the Radetzky Bridge was the fourth iron bridge in Graz "opened to traffic" ( Karl Holzmaier : Arbeiterwille )

In 1994 the bridge was renovated. The bridge received four light pylons in the form of slender, diagonally cut cylinders and, in order to create a vehicle lane, was widened on the downstream, southern side, by a footpath and cycle path on its own supporting structure.

Austria's oldest wave for surfers is under the bridge .
