Radial piston engine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radial piston motors are pneumatic or hydraulic motors based on the radial piston principle for low speeds and high torques .

Pneumatic radial piston motors

Working method

Pneumatic radial piston motors are motors driven by compressed air that work without lamellas, connecting rods and crankshafts . The star-shaped working pistons roll on a curve machined inside the housing. They are supplied with compressed air from the center via a control ring and a fixed control shaft. This inevitably activates the pistons. The control ring is floatingly connected to the cylinder disk, which is double-mounted on the control shaft. When the rotation starts, the supply air and exhaust air alternately supply the pistons with compressed air and vent them. By reversing the supply and exhaust air, immediate left or right rotation can be generated - even under load.

Advantages of the pneumatic radial piston motor

  • extremely low compressed air consumption
  • resilient to a standstill
  • high torques
  • low noise emission
  • low speeds even without gear
  • High efficiency
  • compact structure

Areas of application

Potentially explosive environments

Due to their purely mechanical design, the radial piston motors do not generate any heat or sparks that could ignite easily flammable substances. Therefore, compressed air motors with a corresponding ATEX certificate can be used in potentially explosive environments: agitators, painting technology, chemical plant construction, mills and grinders , bulk material transport systems , chemical process containers , processing of paints, adhesives, fillers and sealants.

Humid / dusty environments / use under water

Special air motors that are watertight to IP68 and operate on the radial piston principle can be used in humid environments or even completely submerged in water. They are used, for example, to close pipe systems, to drive vehicles in a damp environment, in sewer systems, on drilling rigs or in shipbuilding.

Food industry

A radial piston motor made of stainless steel is highly resistant to aggressive media and is therefore food-safe and easy to clean. It is used, for example, in food processing machines, packaging machines, filling systems, breweries, bakery machines, chocolate agitators, milk collection technology, and milk processing.

Ferrite-free / magnetic field-free application

Magnetic components can be dispensed with in the construction of the pneumatic radial piston motor. In addition, there is no potential for interference from electronics or sensors. It is therefore suitable for use in high-frequency and magnetic resonance applications in MRT devices in medical technology, for mine detectors and TESLA applications.

Hydraulic radial piston motors

The working cylinders are arranged radially around a crankshaft , similar to a radial engine . The working cylinders are controlled by a rotary valve control and connected to the inlet and return, which creates a rotary movement. These engines do not have real connecting rods as in a radial engine, but only pivotable pressure pieces that are hydrostatically supported. As a result, internal friction is low and the motors are highly efficient .
