Wheel flap

Turning the wheel of a gymnast at the 2019 Junior World Championship

The wheel flip (also: hand support roll sideways; in Switzerland often simply "wheel") is an acrobatic gymnastics exercise . It is a sideways rollover , with hands and feet resting on an imaginary or existing line (e.g. balance beam ) at a greater distance . A wheel turn is comparable to a wheel, but a wheel turn is carried out with greater momentum and the feet are "beaten" together in the air. If you then turn 90 degrees, it is called a wheel turn or "round-off".

Different variations in implementation:

  • Dynamic: The gymnast takes a run-up and lets himself fall sideways onto the outstretched hands . The body then rotates around the center of the body with outstretched legs like a somersault , the swing taken before is sufficient to bring the wheel racket back to a standing position.
  • Static: Without starting to gain weight, the bike is turned out of the lunge step (this swing is sufficient). The bike is being turned on and the upper body is turned just above the floor and the sequence of movements is completed with the handstand with legs apart.
