Rafena (actually VEB RAFENA-Werke Radeberg ) was a television set manufacturer in Radeberg , which emerged from the VEB Sachsenwerk Radeberg through a change of name . The name was created in November 1956 after a naming competition and is an acronym from RA deberger FE rnseh- und NA chrichtentechnik. The plant was the sole manufacturer from 1951 to 1957 and until 1968 the larger of the two main producers of televisions in the GDR .

In 1966 the company was reoriented as a producer of large computer systems. As a result, the legal capacity of the VEB Rafena Werke Radeberg was terminated in 1969, immediately following the establishment of the VEB Kombinat Robotron in Radeberg under assignment to the Ministry of Electrical Engineering and Electronics . From Rafena the combine its first sole manufacturing operation was with the establishment VEB Kombinat Robotron operating Radeberg . Production was carried out for the data technology and radio relay technology segments . Initially, the company was also the headquarters of the combine management and thus had the status of a parent plant.

Other business areas of Rafena were the development, production and technical service of devices and systems for civil and military radio link technology (route networks) and, until 1959, the manufacture of electric motors. After the television set production in the "VEB Sachsenwerk Radeberg" formed on July 1, 1952 (which emerged from the "Soviet stock corporation 'Device' in Germany, Sachsenwerk Radeberg plant" formed in August 1946); already after the end of the war there were no longer any ties to Sachsenwerk Dresden or Niedersedlitz) had become the main production, it was renamed “VEB Rafena-Werke Radeberg” in November 1956. After IT technology had been produced as early as 1967 (computer R 300 , process computer PR 2000 / PR 4000, small computer), television set production was discontinued in 1968, and in 1969 Rafena was renamed "VEB Robotron-Elektronik Radeberg". From 1972, in order to better supply the GDR population with consumer goods in Radeberg, the development and production of entertainment electronics devices with the control function for all operations of the Robotron combine was arranged. Radio sets were produced in large series from 1973, black and white televisions from 1974 and color television sets from 1982 (including mainly export devices for Quelle and Neckermann ). With the portable black and white televisions as OIRT / CCIR -Zweinormempfänger, such as. B. Combi-Vision RF3311, in the GDR one could also receive television from the People's Republic of Poland and the ČSSR with picture and sound.
