Frame construction or landscape in a slide is a work of art by the former architects and artists group Haus-Rucker-Co . The installation was designed for documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977 and has since stood on the east side of Friedrichsplatz above Karlsaue and the orangery .

history

The Auetor stood on the site of the work of art until 1907 ; it served to accentuate the "window to the landscape". From 1909 the Prussian State Theater was built at this point , the magnificent building of which cordoned off Friedrichsplatz from the Aue. After severe bomb damage in World War II, the theater was rebuilt at a different location according to new designs. The view of the floodplain was thus free again. At the location of the former Auetor, the frame construction work of art was set up for documenta 6. From a distance it offers a view through the frame, at the same time also the inspection over a footbridge and from there a panoramic view.

After the end of the exhibition, the future of the object, which was valued as a “landmark of documenta 6”, was initially not clear. The Kasseler Sparkasse bought the plant and transferred it to the city of Kassel in 1979.

description

The installation, made of steel and steel mesh, has a basic length of 31 meters, a height of 14 meters and a width of 16.5 meters. On the Friedrichsplatz on the edge of the slope towards the Karlsaue there is a large, vertical steel lattice frame measuring 14 by 14 meters. The view leads through it through another, laterally offset lattice frame measuring 2.80 by 2.80 meters, which is made of brass.

This frame is attached to a structure made of several steel tubes welded together, which in turn is braced to the main frame with steel cables. On the terrace, right next to the main frame, there is a narrow steel walkway that can be walked on by one person. It leads over the parapet of the terrace towards the small frame.

The work of art offers a framed view of the Karlsaue, whereby the view of large ones is guided through the small frame and focused on the orangery. This arrangement creates two landscape sections of different sizes that are nested within one another. The bridge allows the viewer to approach the smaller of the two framed sections and thereby leave the view through the large frame.

The frame construction is to be understood as "architecture of perception and complement terrestrial environment", according to the artists' group. The installation is intended to bring the landscape, which has always been visible, into a conscious field of perception.
