Volker Soergel

Volker Soergel (born March 9, 1931 in Breslau ) is a German physicist and university professor .

Life

Volker Soergel was born as the third of nine children of Wolfgang Soergel and Elsbeth Soergel. Rieth born.

In 1956 he was with a work on a nuclear physics topic at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg to Dr. rer. nat. PhD . After a one-year postdoc at Caltech, he was a Research Fellow at CERN from 1962 to 1968 before he was appointed professor of physics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . From 1969 he was director of the Physics Institute there.

From 1974 to 1979 Soergel was chairman of the council of the German electron synchrotron DESY . From 1979–1981 he worked as research director at CERN . In 1981 he took over the chairmanship of the DESY board of directors. From 1981 to 1993 he coordinated the construction of the HERA electron-proton storage ring .

Until 2000 he was managing director of the Max Planck Institute for Physics (Werner Heisenberg Institute) in Munich . He is an external scientific member of the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg.

Soergel represented the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences in the "Working Group on Society Consulting / Future Issues" of the Academy Union .

He plays the violin and viola and likes to make music in his free time. B. together with his Geneva colleagues Wolfgang Kummer , Carlo Rubbia and Jack Steinberger .

His son Wolfgang Soergel is a mathematician.
