Wolfgang Soergel (born June 12, 1962 ) is a German mathematician who deals with geometry and representation theory.

life and work

Wolfgang Soergel was born in Geneva as the son of the physicist Volker Soergel and is the grandson of the paleontologist Wolfgang Soergel . He spent his youth in Heidelberg, where he passed the Abitur examination at the Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium in 1980 . He studied mathematics and physics in Geneva and Bonn and received his doctorate in 1988 under Jens Carsten Jantzen in Hamburg ( universal versus relative envelopes: a geometric investigation of quotients of universal envelopes of semi-simple Lie algebras ). After research stays at Berkeley, Harvard and at MIT , he received his habilitation in Bonn in 1991. In 1994 he was appointed to the University of Freiburg. In 1994 he lectured at the International Congress of Mathematicians . Since 2008 he has been a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . He made important contributions to representation theory, in particular to the Kazhdan-Lusztig theory and Koszul duality . The Soergel bimodules category is named after him . His doctoral students included Peter Fiebig , Catharina Stroppel and Geordie Williamson .
