from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jens Carsten Jantzen (born October 18, 1948 in Störtewerkerkoog ) is a German mathematician who deals with algebra .

Jens Carsten Jantzen in Oberwolfach 2007

Jantzen received his doctorate in 1973 at the University of Bonn under Jacques Tits ( representations of semi-simple algebraic groups and associated contravariant forms ). In 1977 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bonn ( modules with the highest weight ) and was scientific advisor and professor there from 1978 to 1985. From 1985 to 1988 he was professor at the University of Hamburg , from 1988 professor at the University of Oregon and he has been professor at the University of Aarhus since 1995 .

He deals with representation theory of algebraic groups and Lie algebras . Various mathematical concepts are named after him and were introduced by him, such as Jantzen filtration, Jantzen sum formula, translation functors of Lie algebras (independently by Gregg Zuckerman ).

He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2012 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . From 2008 to 2011 he was editor of Mathematica Scandinavica, 1985 to 1988 of the essays from the Mathematical Seminar of the University of Hamburg and 1996 to 2007 of the Mathematical Journal. He was invited speaker at the 1994 International Congress of Mathematicians in Warsaw ( Enveloping algebras of semi-simple Lie algebras ).

Wolfgang Soergel is one of his doctoral students .
