Gregg Jay Zuckerman (* 1949 in Los Angeles ) is an American mathematician. He is a professor at Yale University . He deals with Lie groups and their representations.

Zuckerman received his PhD from Princeton University in 1975 with Elias Stein ( Some character identities for semisimple Lie groups ). In 1974/75 and 1978 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . 1977/78 he was a Junior Faculty Fellow and later Professor at Yale.

With Anthony W. Knapp he classified the tempered irreducible representations of semi-simple Lie groups in 1976 (they play a special role in the harmonic analysis of Lie groups). He also made contributions to mathematical physics, among others with Howard Garland and Igor Frenkel in 1986 (connection of BRST quantization of strings with cohomology of graded lie data). and was one of the first to treat Chern-Simons field theories (even before Edward Witten ).

He is involved in the Atlas of Lie Groups, a collaboration that pursues the goal of determining the irreducible unitary representations of Lie groups (unitary dual), for which there is in principle a finite algorithm (as emerged from the work of Zuckerman and others).

From 1979 to 1981 he was a Sloan Research Fellow .
