Rainald of Broyes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rainald von Broyes (Latin: Reinoldus de Breis , French: Renaud de Broyes ; † October 1096 ) was a subordinate of the People's Crusade .

Rainald was probably a member of the lordly family of Broyes ( Dép. Marne ) in Champagne . The lord of the castle, Hugo II Bardoul , who took part in the 1101 crusade , may have been his brother.

Rainald belonged to the main army of the People's Crusade under the leadership of Peter the Hermit that crossed Hungary in the direction of Constantinople in 1096 . He is mentioned during the siege of Semlin and in the battle against the town commander of Niš . On the march to Nicaea , Rainald, Walter Sans-Avoir and Walter von Breteuil spoke out in favor of retreating to the safe Constantinople in the face of an army of the Rum Seljuks , which is why they were insulted by Gottfried Burel as cowards and thus changed their mind to march on. In the following battle against the Rum Seljuks, Rainald was killed.
