Rainbow Coalition
The Rainbow Coalition was the union of the social revolutionary movements in the USA. It was initiated by the co-founder of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton, in the late 1960s.
composition
The coalition saw itself as a fighting alliance against the oppression of the working class of African Americans , white Americans, Puerto Ricans , Native Americans and Hispanics . From the FBI's point of view, the Rainbow Coalition was therefore extremely dangerous: Racial boundaries played no role, instead they concentrated on the social question and thus also questioned the social supremacy of whites based on the racial boundaries ( white supremacy ) of American society.
In the Rainbow Coalition were united:
- Black Panther Party
- Young Lords Organization, Puerto Rican civil rights movement in the United States
- Young Patriots , civil rights movement of poor white migrant workers with a focus on the City of Chicago
- American Indian Movement
- Brown berets
- I Wor Kuen
- Patriot party
- White Panther Party
- Rising Up Angry
- Lincoln Park Poor People's Coalition
development
Fred Hampton was the face of the Black Panther Party and also the Rainbow Coalition at the time. The Rainbow Coalition was active in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with an emphasis in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to Hampton, William "Preacherman" Fesperman, Jack (Junebug) Boykin, Bobby Joe Mcginnis and Hy Thurman from the Young Patriots Organization and the founder of the Young Lords Jose Cha Cha Jimenez played an important role. Gradually, radical socialist groups joined the coalition. Hampton was shot dead in his sleep in a police operation in December 1969.
In the mid-1980s, the politician Jesse Jackson used the term "Rainbow Coalition" for his unsuccessful presidential campaign. However, this terminology had nothing to do with the revolutionary movement of the original coalition.
