Rainer Frank (legal scholar)

Rainer Frank (born July 14, 1938 in Zell am Harmersbach ) is a German law scholar and former professor at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

Life

Frank studied law at the University of Freiburg from 1957 until his first state examination in law in 1961 . After studying in Grenoble, Rome and Illinois and completing his legal clerkship, he passed his second state examination in 1967. In the same year he did his doctorate under the supervision of Hans-Heinrich Jescheck with a thesis comparing criminal procedure law on Dr. iur. Subsequently, he worked as a research assistant at the chair of Wolfram Müller-Freienfels at the Institute for Foreign and International Private Law Dept. II of the University of Freiburg. Frank completed his habilitation there in 1976 and received the venia legendi for the subjects civil law, civil procedural law, international private and procedural law and comparative law.

From 1977 to 1980 Frank was a professor at the University of Münster . In 1980 he changed to the chair for civil law and procedural law at the University of Augsburg . From 1985 until his retirement in 2003 Frank held the chair for German and foreign civil law and commercial law and was Müller-Freienfels' successor as director of Dept. II of the Institute for Foreign and International Private Law at the University of Freiburg. Frank was also a professor at the Faculté International de Droit Comparé in Strasbourg since 1981. He was also visiting professor in Seoul , Leuven , Toulouse , London and Paris , among others . His successor at the Freiburg chair was Hanno Merkt .

Frank's research focuses primarily on comparative private law and international private law, there in turn in international family law and inheritance law.
